Shandy

When I first started bartending, I had no idea what a shandy was when my customers from Australia and the UK started ordering them. It’s a combination of beer and lemon lime soda. It didn’t take long for me to see why it was so popular, especially during the hot summer: it is lighter, sweeter and more refreshing than a beer alone. Light lagers are the best beers to use because of their mild flavor, and I find that Asian beers work especially well. I use a three to one ratio when I make them, but the proportions can be adjusted to your own tastes. Lemonade or sparkling lemonade can be used in place of the lemon-lime soda, and I recommend San Pellegrino Limonata or Lorina Sparkling Lemonade if you go for that option.

The first time I had a Shandy I was on vacation in England. Everyone was drinking them and I had no idea what they were, but they won me over fast because they are so refreshing. I think they made them with “lemon squash” which is regular lemonade there.
