Another Thanksgiving is just around the corner, which means it’s time to get my holiday infusions going. This year I decided to make a Pumpkin Pie Spiced Vodka. Pumpkin pie spice is made up of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves that is typically used to flavor pumpkin pies and other pumpkin desserts. The combination is such a staple for holiday baking that spice companies package the spice mix pre-blended – and that is the base for this infusion. A fresh container of pumpkin pie spice is potent, so you might be surprised at how little you need to capture all those spices in your vodka.
The spice mixture will clump up in the bottom of the jar that you use for your infusion. If you are careful, you can actually pour out the vodka and leave the sediment behind in the jar for a transparent, pumpkin-colored spirit. A safer option is to pour the infused vodka through a coffee filter, which will remove any spice residue.
I recommend trying infusions in small batches before mixing up a whole bottle of vodka. After all, you may find that you need to adjust the flavors to your tastes and don’t want to waste a whole bottle of vodka on an experiment. One or two cups is the perfect amount to start with, and you can always scale up to bigger batches for holiday entertaining or gift-giving.
Pumpkin Pie Spiced Vodka Infusion
Glassware: Resealable Bottle
2 Cup Vodka
1/4 Tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice
In a bottle with a resealable lid, pour in the vodka and add the pumpkin pie spice. Seal the bottle and shake well. Let it sit overnight to infuse. Pour the infusion through a coffee filter to strain out the spice before use. Try it in my Pumpkin Spiced White Russian or the Pumpkin Spice Spiked Coffee.
