Presidente Brandy Smash

Presidente isn’t the first brandy that I would reach for if I wanted to drink brandy straight, but I always seem to have a bottle on hand. It’s one of those bottles that, like magic, keeps appearing and disappearing many times over the course of the year. I use it in my holiday punch so it first appears at Christmas and disappears at New Years. Than another bottle appears during the Super Bowl and disappears again sometime around spring when the I start grilling. I use Presidente because it mixes well and I like the flavor profile.

This Brandy Smash is the perfect type of drink to use some of my Presidente on a hot summer evening. It’s an easy-to-drink, refreshing cocktail that reminds me of a mint julep and is made in much the same way, with mint leaves muddled at the bottom of the glass to release their flavor before being topped with cointreau, brandy and club soda for a little fizz.

Method: Muddle

2 oz. Presidente Brandy
3/4 oz. Cointreau
1/2 oz. Double Simple Syrup
7-8 Mint Leaves
Club Soda

Add mint leaves and the simple syrup to the bottom of a glass and muddle well. Now pour in the Presidente, and the Cointreau. Fill with crushed ice and stir, then top with club soda. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
