Mrs Doyle is a cocktail that caught my eye on the Death & Co. book because it uses an ingredient that I really enjoy, but rarely see used outside of tiki drinks: Swedish Punsch. Punsch is a Swedish spiced liqueur that is infused with flavors of allspice, clove and orange, which makes it smell a bit like the holiday season. It’s lightly sweetened and very potent, so a little bit can add a lot of complexity to a drink. I don’t always have a bottle on hand, but when I do, I am always on the lookout for recipes where I can put it to good use.
Mrs Doyle is a lovely way to enjoy Irish whiskey and a perfect cocktail for St Patrick’s Day – even though it isn’t green. The cocktail is made with Irish whiskey, Swedish punsch, lemon juice and simple syrup. It has a nice spice both from the whiskey and the punsch, as well as a hint of nutty vanilla and oak. In the end it reminds me more of a daiquiri than anything else… and that is not a bad thing at all. This cocktail has a nice balance of sweet, citrus and spice, and it is easy to knock them back just as quickly as you can make them.
2 oz. Irish Whiskey
1/4 oz. Swedish Punsch
3/4 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously, then strain into a chilled coupe.
