It’s no secret that I am a fan of maple syrup as a cocktail ingredient. It is easy to incorporate into drinks and its rich, sweet flavor goes with all kinds of spirits and juices. This maple-infused cocktail is a variation on a classic Bee’s Knees, which gets its name from the honey that is used to sweeten it. Although there is no honey in this recipe, I kept the bee reference in the name because that is the cocktail that inspired this one.
When making a Maple Bee’s Knees, be sure to use a good quality maple syrup so that you get the best maple flavor in your drink. It may be tempting to use “pancake syrup,” since it is so much less expensive than real maple, but it is not much more than flavored corn syrup and doesn’t hold a candle to the real thing in most recipes. Aromatic gin and zesty fresh lemon juice counter the deep sweetness of the maple syrup to create a very well balanced cocktail.
2 oz. Gin
3/4 oz. Maple Syrup
3/4 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
Pour all of the ingredients into a shaker and fill with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon twist.
