Campari and Blood Orange

Campari and Blood Orange Cocktail
Sometimes the best drinks are the simplest because they really let the ingredients speak for themselves. This is particularly true when you’re working with high quality, in-season ingredients like blood oranges. Blood oranges are know for their bright red interior and the fact that they tend to be slightly sweeter than many other oranges. Many drinks only call for a small amount of orange juice and that just doesn’t do justice to this unique citrus fruit. This Campari and Blood Orange cocktail is a great example of a drink that really lets the blood orange be the star. The sweetness of the juice takes the edge off the bitterness of the Campari, and you get a well balanced cocktail with a great orange flavor. The drink looks beautiful when it is mixed, as well, since both Campari and blood oranges have the same striking color.

Blood oranges have a limited season, especially when it comes to regular grocery stores. You best bet for finding them is by going to a farmers market, where you can pick up plenty of fresh blood oranges during growing season. For save the juice for the off season, squeeze your oranges and freeze the juice in an ice cube tray, then defrost them when you need the juice.
